Gay Russian Activist Isakov To Be Convicted
Just last month, twenty-four year-old Dimitry Isakov staged a protest in Kazan. He held a sign that read “Being gay and loving gays is normal. Beating gays and killing gays is a crime!” Isakov’s parents tipped off the police and had their son arrested; his father held him down and his mother took away Dimitry’s sign.
Following his protest, Isakov was beaten and consequently had to use crutches for ten days. He coincidentally lost his job at a bank although his employment said his arrest was not due to his firing.
Not Isolated Incidents
As if these incidents weren’t bad enough, a teen Erik Fedoseyev, after viewing pictures of the protest on the Internet, filed charges at his father’s request. Fedoseyev’s father is bitter because his son’s mother left him for a woman.
Others have been charged and arrested. The week before Isakov’s arrest, four Dutch tourists were first foreigners to be charged under “gay propaganda law.”
Isakov Could Be First Gay Person Convicted
Isakov’s case is currently at the Supreme Court of Tatarstan. If convicted, he faces up to $150 in fines. Nikolai Alekseyev has said that he is providing legal support for Isakov.
The leading proponent in Russia of laws governing gay propaganda is Nikolai Alekseyev, the LGBT activist. Last month, the police raided his home, questioned him for three hours, and according to Nikolai, “destroyed everything.”
Lucas vs. Alekseyev
Last month, Michael Lucas, Russian-born porn king, wrote a vitriolic op-ed about Alekseyev. Lucas suggested that Alekseyev was acting strangely, and no longer advocating for Russia’s LGBT population. Lucas thinks that most likely Alekseyev has been bribed by the Kremlin to tone down his views.
In response, Alekseyev has been criticizing the West for boycotting the Games at Sochi and has posted anti-semitic remarks about Lucas, a Jew. Witness this tweet by Alexeyev: “Tomorrow London protest “Love Russia, hate homophobia.” We suggest “
